ScoatClass
Bringing Classroom Workflows Into One Digital Platform
Project Overview
ScoatClass is a web-based learning and class management platform (LMS) designed to consolidate routine classroom administration, teaching materials, and student activity into a single, cohesive workflow.
Many educational teams rely on a patchwork of disconnected tools: chat apps for distribution, cloud drives for files, spreadsheets for rosters, and ad-hoc forms for quizzes. ScoatClass centralizes these requirements into an integrated portal tailored for direct instructor-student interaction.
The Challenge
Off-the-shelf institutional LMS solutions (such as enterprise Moodle or Canvas setups) are frequently over-engineered for small-to-medium educational institutions, coaching classes, or independent tutoring cohorts. They carry heavy server overhead, complex administrative hierarchies, and steep learning curves.
Key challenges identified:
- Fragmented Communication: Learning materials get buried in group chats or disorganized shared drives.
- Attendance & Submission Tracking: Instructors spend excessive time tallying submissions and manually calculating participation metrics.
- Resource Organization: Course content lacked hierarchical structuring (modules, lessons, supplementary attachments).
- Access Friction: Students struggled with cumbersome login flows and disjointed interfaces on mobile devices.
Core Features & Functional Workflows
ScoatClass was built around simplicity, speed, and clear operational boundaries:
Class & Roster Management
Teachers can create classes, generate unique enrollment codes, track active rosters, and manage student lifecycle states without IT assistance.
Modular Course Builder
Structure curriculum into sequential modules, reading handouts, embedded references, and homework deliverables with clear due dates.
Student Assignment Portal
Clean interface for students to view deadlines, submit files or text entries, and receive timely feedback and grade marks.
Activity Logs & Progress
Instructors receive consolidated views of who has accessed materials, completed tasks, or requires proactive academic intervention.
Technical Architecture
The platform is architected around a modular MVC pattern powered by PHP and a relational MySQL database. This ensures high portability, low hosting requirements, and rapid server-side rendering.
Data Model & Relationship Strategy
The database schema enforces strict referential integrity with cascading updates and soft deletes where auditability is essential. Key entities include:
users— Role-based authorization flags (Admin, Teacher, Student).classrooms— Core tenant container with enrollment tokens and terms.enrollments— Junction table tracking student registration status and join dates.modules&lessons— Hierarchical content tree with sequential sorting order.assignments&submissions— Task criteria, timestamped payload logs, and grading status.
Security & Data Integrity
Because an LMS handles student records and academic grades, security practices were baked in from inception:
Current Status & Roadmap
ScoatClass is currently in an In Development state with core administrative, classroom enrollment, and assignment submission flows verified.
Next implementation milestones:
- Interactive real-time notifications for due dates and grade releases.
- Integration with the Scoat CBT module for seamless in-platform testing.
- Export utilities for grade transcripts in standardized CSV/Excel formats.
